The Sacramento Physicians' Initiative to Reach out, Innovate and Teach (SPIRIT) program meets the healthcare needs of the community by recruiting and placing physician volunteers to provide free medical services to our region’s uninsured. A collaborative partnership of the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society, Kaiser Permanente, Dignity/Mercy Healthcare, Sutter Health and UC Davis Health System, SPIRIT coordinates surgical services for uninsured individuals at local hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.
Since the SPIRIT program’s inception, physician volunteers have provided over $8.9 million in free care to the uninsured, treated over 41,000 patients and performed over 750 surgeries, including cataract and hernia repair.
SPIRIT receives in-kind support from Sacramento Anesthesia Medical Group, Diagnostic Pathology Medical Group, Central Anesthesia Service Exchange Medical Group, Northern California Lions Sight Association, and
many other healthcare organizations.
SSVMS is grateful for our supporters, including Serotonin Surge charities and BloodSource, for their generous contributions to the SPIRIT program.
There are many volunteer opportunities available to both primary care and specialty physicians. Whether you are interested in providing primary care services in a local county or community clinic, specialty services in your private office, or surgical services at a partner hospital or surgery center, SPIRIT makes it easy for you to give back to the community by coordinating volunteer schedules and providing case management services.
