National Volunteer Week is April 27–May 3, 2003. And we, like most other organizations that work with volunteers, will be having our Annual Volunteer Recognition Event during that time. But in the meantime, I wanted to highlight for you some of the accomplishments of our wonderful volunteers.
In 2002, we had a total of 26 volunteer physicians treating patients in county health centers. The majority of our volunteers are placed at the Capital Health Center, where we offer Primary Care services, as well as specialty clinics in Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, and Rheumatology. At the Primary Care Center, we had a Primary Care physician and nurse volunteer team, as well as our Orthopedic clinic with six specialists.
Gynecological specialty care was provided by a SPIRIT volunteer at the Northeast Health Center, and Allergy specialty care was available at both the Del Paso Health Center (for adults) and the Oak Park Health Center (for children). In addition, a SPIRIT volunteer provided Mental Health services at GENESIS.
In total, SPIRIT volunteers at these centers donated in excess of 1,200 hours, and provided over 1,400 patients with care.
In addition to these amazing volunteer efforts, SPIRIT is also fortunate to have seven volunteers who see our patients in their private practices for care in ENT, Endocrinology, Ophthalmology, and Urology.
I would be remiss if I didn't commend our volunteer surgeons and their staffs and teams at Mercy, Kaiser, and Sutter for the 31 Hernia Repair Surgeries performed for SPIRIT patients in 2002.
Not to be overlooked were the accomplishments of our 15 Adopt-a-School volunteers who were active in 15 different schools in 2002. Eight "Why Immunize?" presentations were made in 2002 by five volunteers.
If you see anyone listed below, please join me in congratulating them on another year of generosity and commitment to our programs and our community!
