Andrew M. Henderson, Jr., MD, 1910-2004
Dr. Andrew Henderson, the president of the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society in 1950, died at his home on July 6 after a long battle with cancer. He was a life-long resident of Sacramento, born August 19, 1910. He graduated from Sacramento High in 1928, the University of California in 1928, and from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1936. He joined his father, Dr. Andrew M. Henderson. Sr., in general practice, then returned to Rochester to complete training in obstetrics and gynecology in 1941, a specialty he practiced the rest of his career. He volunteered and served with the Army's 51st Evacuation Hospital Unit from 1942-1947.
Dr. Henderson was a founding member of the Sacramento Blood Bank (now BloodSource) in 1947, and served as its administrative director from 1952-1963. He chaired the Board of Trustees of Sutter Hospitals for 20 years. He was an avid golfer and past president of the Del Paso Country Club. His wife of 60 years, Maude Pearson Henderson, died in 2000. He is survived by a son and five grandsons.
William T. Kelley, MD, 1925-2004
Dr. William T. Kelley, who died July 15, was the fifth generation of his family to practice medicine. He was born on October 29, 1925, in Sacramento to Lawrence Kelly and Stella Mudd Kelley; his great grandfather was Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, who had set the leg of John Wilkes Booth after Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln.
He graduated from Christian Brothers High School, served for two years with an Army peacekeeping force in Europe in World War II, returned to graduate from Santa Clara University in 1949, and obtained his MD from Creighton University in 1953. He practiced medicine in Sacramento for the next 50 years. He joined the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society in 1957 and was active on the society's Finance, Long Range Planning, Research and Planning, and other committees. He is survived by his wife, Molly, three sons, a daughter and a brother.
Aloysius Leo Kuntz, MD, 1928-2004
Dr. Aloysius Leo Kuntz, a founder of the Cordova Medical Group, the first medical clinic in the Rancho Cordova area, died July 3 at the age of 76. He had been active in the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society since 1955, serving on the Industrial Medicine, Disaster, Emergency Care and other society committees. He was a past president of the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce and was active in the Community Council and in Rotary International.
After graduating from Notre Dame, he earned an MD at Tulane University in New Orleans, and then trained at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He settled in this area after serving in the Air Force at Mather Air Force Base. He traveled extensively in semi-retirement and delighted in narrating videos of experiences in foreign countries. He loved his 4K Ranch in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Dr. Kuntz is survived by his wife, Aline, a son and daughter, a brother and a grandson.
