Viewing Rancho Seco

Committee gathering at site. Committee entering the site. Site control room. Cooling towers
THE RANCHO SECO NUCLEAR POWER PLANT went on line in 1974, but a public vote closed the plant on June 7, 1989. Decommissioning began soon after and is expected to be completed by 2008. The two landmark cooling towers (now inactive) will remain on the property indefinitely.

The SSVMS Environmental and Public Health Committee toured the plant on June 15, 2004. These photos were taken during the visit. The plant poses little or no danger of radiation exposure or health risk to the community.

Solar panels have been on the site since the early 80s and a natural gas-fired plant is being built a half mile south of the former nuclear plant.
