IN MEMORIAM

Robert Harry Juzek, MD

BOB JUZEK WAS A LONGTIME Sacramento urologist, a dedicated physician, a remarkable family man and a genuine friend.

He was born on March 12, 1921 in Sioux Falls, IA to Harry and Suzanne Juzek. His father, a military man, relocated the young family to Hawaii, where Bob developed a lifelong passion for the sea. His vibrant childhood years were spent surfing, sailing, working in the pineapple fields and chasing hula girls.

After graduating from Punahou High School, Juzek attended the University of Washington for his bachelor of science degree and University of Michigan Medical School for his medical degree and internship.

A captain in the Medical Corps, Bob saw duty in Japan during WWII, before returning to the University of Michigan for his residency in urology. He married the lovely Alice Brady and honeymooned, via canoe, to Mackinac Island.

In 1952, the Juzeks came to Sacramento to associate with Dr. Nathan Hale. He became a staff member of Sutter and Mercy Hospitals, and devoted time to Sacramento County Hospital.

In 1960, Dr. Juzek and his family traveled to Sweden to purchase "Unda," a 39-foot, 12-ton sailboat. After sailing the North Sea, Dr. Juzek toured "Unda" around the San Francisco Bay and down the coast to Baja California, with friends from all over the world. Bob's sailing expeditions took him to Tahiti, along the Dalmatian Coast, and to Italy and Greek Isles, stopping off to make a house call in Sicily. Everywhere Bob traveled, he established close and lasting friendships.

Truly a Renaissance man, Bob was a ham radio operator, painter, hunter, fisherman and windsurfer. Some of my fondest recollections of Bob include hunting on the ranch with his "no good" Irish setter and touring around the back roads of California on a motorcycle.

Among Bob's many gifts was his vast intellectual curiosity and constant pursuit of knowledge. He was fluent in Italian, Spanish, French, Polish and a little Japanese. His characteristic "multitasking" often had him reading the newspaper, listening to French tapes, and working out on the treadmill, all while shaving before morning rounds. He continued taking piano, guitar and violin lessons until a few weeks before his death.

Dr. Juzek died on April 10 after 85 years of adventure. He is survived by his sister, Betty Daigh of Sacramento, his four children, Anne Pomer of Sacramento, John Juzek of Verdi, NV, Peggy McCollum of Grass Valley, Mark Juzek of Kennwick, his nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye.

- Robert B. Harris, MD
