This photo of Winter's Blue Cold, by Christopher Brown, was provided by the Crocker Art Museum, where the original is on view. It is one of a series of paintings inspired by photographs of the Civil War and of Europe at the turn of the century. Although engaged in recreation, the skating figures are featureless and distanced from one another. Brown frequently explores such ambiguities and speaks of "trying to use light to create clarity and confusion at the same time."
