These blown glass and hand-painted eyeballs, or oculars, were made to demonstrate various eye conditions. The oculars were part of the Museum of Medical History's display last fall at the Crocker Museum; the photo was taken by the Crocker's Chris Woloshansky.

The oculars were on loan from Don Kocmich of Cameron Park, who collects ophthalmic instruments. He believes these were made in Germany or Paris, France, in 1860-1870. They found their way to the Green's Eye Hospital in San Francisco; Kocmich acquired them in the 1970s from a son of the hospital founder.
