Sacramento Historic City Cemetery

City Cemetery Slide1

Adorned with beautiful statues, dramatic markers and lush gardens, Sacramento Historic City Cemetery is an outdoor museum of history, art and horticulture,  recording California’s history from the Gold Rush Era through today.

Established in December of 1849, the City Cemetery has become the resting place of many remarkable Californians, demonstrating the diversity of California history and culture.  Visitors will discover the burial sites of Sacramento mayors and California governors as well as memorials to Civil War Veterans, Volunteer Firemen and victims of the 1850 cholera epidemic.

The City Cemetery is the oldest existing cemetery in Sacramento.  Keeping with the popular style of the times, it was designed to resemble a  Victorian garden.  Traversed by pathways and grand avenues, the cemetery provides a park-like setting for exploring history.

There are over 200 variety of heritage roses and thousands of other flowers, tended to by three plant organizations.  Burials number approximately 30,000.  It has been brought “back to life” over the past 20+ years by the involvement of the Old City Cemetery Committee.  Their website (oldcitycemetery.com) gives a great overview of this important and beautiful historic site.  This cemetery is the final resting place for well over 50 of our dedicated 19th century physicians.

The Cemetery is located at 1000 Broadway, Sacramento.  10th Street begins at the cemetery and is a one way street out of the cemetery towards downtown.  Entry to the cemetery is by Broadway at the 10th Street gate.
