Mixibustion (Folium Artemisiae)
Moxibustion treats and prevents diseases by applying heat to acupuncture points or certain locations of the human body. The material used is called "moxa-wool" and is made of dry mugwort leaves (Folium Artemisiae). The moxa-wool is compressed into either a cigar shape or into small cones and ignited. It's heat is mild and at the same time penetrares deep beneath the skin. In China and Japan it may actually be applied directly to the skin with intent to cause blistering. The frequent blistering and then subsequent scar that forms over a period of time is thought to promote health and extend life.
