Preparations of Mercury

Prior to the invention of penicillin in the 1940s, mercurial ointments such as mercurous chloride (calomel) were employed as treatments for syphilis and gonorrhea. Calomel was also used as a purgative (harsh laxative) and a emetic to induce vomiting.
