SSVMS Releases White Paper: Crisis in the Emergency Department:  Removing Barriers to Timely and Appropriate Mental Health Treatment. The paper assesses the historical events leading up to the mental healthcare delivery crisis in the Sacramento region.  Additionally, the white paper proposes three overarching recommendations to improve the quality of care for those experiencing a mental health crisis and to decrease the burden on the region’s emergency departments.  Click here to download a copy of the white paper.

Anti-vaccination Opponents Gathering Signatures to Recall the Only Physician in the California Legislature.  With our support, Dr. Richard Pan won his election to the State Senate promising to work to keep Californians safe and healthy, and he did just that authoring SB277 to abolish non-medical exemptions to school vaccinations.  TIME magazine called Dr. Richard Pan a hero for his leadership in fighting vaccine-preventable diseases.  Now, anti-vaccination supporters are gathering signatures to recall him. Please go to www.KeepDrPan.com and click on “Stand with Dr. Pan” to add your name to the list of people who oppose the anti-vaccination group attempt to recall him.

DHCS is Seeking Input from Individual Physicians.  The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) is seeking physicians and allied providers in solo or small practice to participate in a focus group to provide feedback on the new Medi-Cal provider enrollment system, Provider Application and Validation for Enrollment (PAVE).  The sessions will be at the California Medical Association, 1201 J Street, Sacramento, 6-8pm on either September 15, 16, or 17.  RSVP availability for each of the three dates to DHCSPEDPAVE@dhcs.ca.gov by Friday, September 4, 2015.  For more information contact Kristine Marck kmarck@cmanet.org or (916) 551-2037.

SSVMS Meets with Congressional Representatives to Urge Meaningful Use Reform and Relief from RAC Audits.  SSVMS leadership recently meet with Representatives Doris Matsui, Ami Bera, and Tom McClintock to urge them to immediately pass EHR meaningful use reform and to stop Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) costly and abusive practices. CMS Clarifies ICD-10 Grace Period Guidance.  In early July, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that for a period of one year, it will allow for flexibility in claims payment, auditing and quality reporting processes as the medical community gains experience using the new ICD-10 code set.  Click here for more information.  Click here to download CMA’s ICD-10 Transition Guide, which includes an ICD-10 Transition Preparation Checklist.  These resources are free to members only.

Bills to Fight Tobacco Move Forward in Special Session.  CMA-sponsored tobacco-related bills that would boost regulations on e-cigarettes, increase the tobacco purchasing age to 21, and allow local jurisdictions to tax tobacco are moving forward in the Legislature’s special health session.  Click here for more information.

Interested in Shaping Health Policy?  SSVMS has vacancies on its Delegation to the California Medical Association (CMA) House of Delegates.  The CMA House of Delegates convenes annually to debate and act on resolutions and reports dealing with a myriad of issues concerning medical practice, public health and CMA governance. PHYSICIAN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Physician Volunteers Sought to Provide Services to the Undocumented.  The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors recently voted to restore health care services for part of its indigent population, including the undocumented.  SSVMS’ Sacramento Physicians Initiative to Reach out, Innovate and Teach (SPIRIT) Program will provide volunteer specialty and surgical services.  Volunteer opportunities could be available in your private office, in community clinics and in local hospitals and surgery centers.  To volunteer, contact Kris Wallach at kwallach@ssvms.org or (916)452-2671.
