"El Greco's Sunset" was taken just over 10 years ago in Toledo, Spain, by Liz Welsh Abad. The view is from the courtyard of the home in which Doménikos Theotokópoulos - El Greco - lived and worked in the late 1500s and early 1600s.
The window opens into a large room in which he painted, and which was set up to maximize the use of light. It may appear there is a light on inside the room, but the setting sun is actually shining through a second window on the far western wall. The photographer was also struck by the guy wires for the movable overhead awning, used to control the light and heat of the day. © 2001 Liz Welsh Abad |
