"Light Well" is the last of six cover photos by Sacramento photographer Liz Welsh Abad. It was taken in 1997 in the steep, narrow, five story stairwell of a rectory in Ciaño, Spain. The priest living there at the time was the brother of her husband, Jose. Ms. Welsh Abad shot several rolls of film there, and returned a year later to take more. On the upper floors, the sunlight created whimsical, constantly changing patterns on the walls. But the view from the bottom of the stairwell, showing the handrail spiraling up toward the source of light, created a much more abstract, even contemplative pattern. © 2001 Liz Welsh Abad |
