William Hahn's "The Convalescent," is an oil on canvas painted in 1873. The original, a gift of Edwina V. Pfund, is on display at the Crocker Art Museum. A rare interior scene in 19th-century California art, "The Convalescent" depicts a subject who appears to be secure in her warm Victorian parlor; the serious tone of the scene reflects her recovering condition. According to the Crocker, "The work is not only a visual tribute to San Francisco's citizens, but inconspicuously celebrates the city as the urban culture center of the West in its time."
