About the Cover

About the Cover The gold rush helped to create the California we now know, and the steamboat transported many of the early miners.

The paddlewheel riverboat predates the gold rush by two years, but this particular paddlewheeler, the Delta King (and its sister ship, the Delta Queen) was a later version, built in 1927. It ferried passengers between San Francisco and Sacramento into the 1930s.

This 35 mm photo of the Delta King was taken in Old Sacramento during last year's Jazz Jubilee by Sacramento anesthesiologist Dr. David J. Ruderman.
