Mentorship In Medicine

Future of Medicine - Students dissecting animal parts.
SSVMS’s mentorship initiative, Mentorship in Medicine, connects and inspires our local health care community. Launched in 2025, this program is a testament to the power of collaboration, offering an opportunity for seasoned physicians to share their wisdom while helping the next generation of doctors find their path. Together, we are building a brighter future for health care in our region.

Mentorship in Medicine operates through two avenues: 1-on-1 Mentoring and Speed Mentoring Sessions.

1-on-1 Mentoring

The 1-on-1 Mentoring component allows for meaningful connections between a mentor and their mentees. Mentor physicians will meet monthly with their assigned mentee. Mentors are active or retired SSVMS member physicians who commit to a five-month mentorship session, with two sessions hosted annually. Mentees include undergrads with a pre-med focus, medical students, residents, and early- to mid-career physicians. Matches are based on specialties, geographic proximity, and more. Over the course of five months, pairs meet at least once a month — in person or virtually — and choose from a list of activities that deepen these bonds.

Upcoming 1-on-1 Mentor Session: August - December 2025

2025 1-on-1 Mentor Session is closed.

Speed Mentoring Sessions

Speed Mentoring Sessions allow for a variety of perspectives to be shared in a short time. These sessions offer a dynamic and engaging way for college and medical students to interact with seasoned physicians. They combine a casual atmosphere with structured intervals where mentees interview mentors and gain valuable insights. With appetizers, a relaxed environment, and time for follow-up conversations, these events are designed to spark connections that can last a lifetime.

Stay tuned for the next session!
