Medical Society News
October 2021
It's really easy to be overwhelmed right now. There's no sense in pretending there's not. This makes it even more important to focus on our own well-being to ensure we can keep the joy of our profession alive.

Last weekend, we worked to do just that as we hosted our Fifth Annual Joy of Medicine Summit. If you weren't able to virtually join us that day, you can watch the sessions at your leisure here:

I also recommend you wow yourself with the magic show put on by medical student Alan Chien.

For me, something that keeps me going is this: it may sometimes feel like we aren't getting through to anyone as the pandemic continues. But nearly 66% of eligible Sacramento County residents are vaccinated, nearly 68% in Yolo County, 62% in El Dorado County, and California's transmission rate is dropping. Most people are listening and most people are taking appropriate action.

Remember to use your free resiliency consultations through the Joy of Medicine! Learn about them here.

As part of SSVMS's ongoing COVID-19 vaccine campaign, physicians are sharing their experiences during the pandemic. Please spread these posts far and wide to highlight the importance of vaccination. Social media links to our posts and sample language can be found below.

To date, SSVMS has hosted a vaccine clinic for independent physicians, produced "Got My Vaccine" buttons for members, regularly update vaccine FAQs in six languages, put together a multi-lingual speakers bureau, distributed a letter to the community in which more than 700 physicians stressed the importance of vaccinations, have produced a series of public service announcements, and are now embarking on an experiences project in which short videos and podcasts will allow physicians to share what they've witnessed.

The best time to discuss a disaster is before one is imminent. This is true when discussing earthquakes and fires and it holds true when it comes to medical disasters. When it comes to discussing, planning, and preparing for disasters, there’s no such thing as too early – only too late.

This presentation will prepare providers to open a dialogue with their patients about advance care planning. We’ll share tips and tricks to impress upon patients the importance of their directives, we’ll discuss pitfalls to avoid, and what can happen when patients don’t have a directive in place.
As the opioid crisis continues, many physicians find themselves asking, "What's the most appropriate way to manage my patients' care?"

This epidemic has opened a lot of eyes and made many rethink their methods. This presentation will provide a solid foundation for the skills needed to manage this oft-maligned patient population.
