Local Burnout Drops: What Does It Mean?

The results of our 2025 Physician Well-Being Survey are in (click here to see them)– and while there’s good news, there’s still work ahead. Burnout among Sacramento-area physicians has dropped to 34%, down from a high of 45% in 2022 and well below the national average of 44%. That’s a sign that many of the wellness efforts across our region are making a difference.

But the survey also showed concerning trends. Far fewer physicians accessed mental health counseling this year, and only 58% plan to maintain their current clinical hours over the next five years. Among physicians experiencing burnout, nearly a third are under age 55 and planning to cut back.

SSVMS will continue to advocate for a better practice environment – one that supports your well-being, values your time, and helps you find joy in medicine. Thank you to everyone working to make that possible. Together, we can protect the health of our profession – and of our community.

Thank you!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY OF THE MONTH

MENTORS NEEDED

SSVMS’s Mentorship in Medicine program is seeking volunteer physician mentors for its upcoming 1-on-1 session running August through December 2025.

Mentors are matched with pre-med students, medical students, residents, or early-career physicians based on a variety of factors. Over the course of five months, mentors and mentees meet once a month - virtually or in person - for conversations, coffee, or professional events. Meeting guidelines and suggested activities are provided to make it easy to connect.

You don’t need to have all the answers, just a willingness to share your experience and help guide the next generation of medicine.

Sign up by June 30.
