Medical Society News

July 2021

Greetings!
SSVMS and CMA are pleased to invite physician practices (independent practitioners and groups with fewer than 200 physicians) to apply for a practice support grant of $10,000 per office location to cover expenses related to providing COVID-19 vaccines. Funded by the California Department of Public Health, the CalVaxGrant program will offer funding, one-on-one myCAvax support, and vaccine administration resources for physician practices. Physicians for a Healthy California will begin accepting grant applications July 12 through August 13, 2021 or until funding is expended. Grants are available on a first come first served basis.

To be eligible for a practice support grant, physician practices must be registered with CAIR2, have an IIS ID, and have completed section A of the myCAVax application. If you are not registered with CAIR2, click here to start the process. Once these steps have been completed you may apply for a practice support grant starting Monday, July 12 at https://www.phcdocs.org/Programs/CalVaxGrant

An FAQ and additional information can be found here. If you are an SSVMS/CMA member, reach out to Dana Brooks dbrooks@ssvms.org for personal assistance.

Email your Senator today to share your concerns about AB 1130 (Wood) which creates an Office of Health Care Affordability run by an unelected bureaucrat with the power to set “cost targets” on physicians.  A sample email is provided.

Email your Assemblymember now to ask for a YES vote on SB 395 (Caballero), which seeks to curtail the growing epidemic of vaping in youth by taxing vaping products at the same rate as traditional tobacco products. Revenues will fund prevention programs and assist with loan repayment for physicians serving patients in underserved areas. This bill will be heard in Assembly Health Committee on Tuesday, July 13. A sample email is provided.

Future of Medicine Summer Program
SSVMS’s Future of Medicine summer program for local, rising high school juniors and seniors was a success! Students learned about careers from numerous healthcare professionals (nurses, public health officials, pharmacists, physicians and more) through presentations, interactive talks, and a live session by Dr. Hudnut on heart health!

We look forward to hosting the program again in 2022. The Future of Medicine has programs for high school, college and medical students. Physicians interested in becoming a mentor or providing job shadowing opportunities, please contact Marlee Turner at mturner@ssvms.org.

Just as you put on your PPE before administering medical care, you should care for yourself before you care for others. SSVMS encourages you to schedule a resiliency consultation with one of our Joy of Medicine psychologists or life coaches. Every physician in the Sacramento region is eligible for up to six sponsored sessions with a provider of your choice.

Dr. Amy Barnhorst, a psychiatrist at UC Davis, works on the frontlines of the mental health system. Join us as she speaks about her advocacy work on gun policy, her unconventional journey into medicine, and her decision to work in psychiatry.
