Dear Physicians, For Legislative Advocacy Day on April 24, 2019, physicians and medical students met with state representatives to advocate for AB 764 (Bonta) Prohibiting Manufacturer Discounts and Coupons of Soda and SB 276 (Pan) The Child Safety and Disease Prevention Act. As the U.S. deals with the worst measles outbreak since 2000, SB 276 is critical. Since the passage of SB 277 (removal of personal belief exemptions to vaccination requirements), the rate of medical exemptions has more than tripled. SB 276 reshapes California's process to require state-level public health approval of all medical exemptions. This new legislation will close a loophole in the current law that has allowed a small handful of rogue doctors to skirt the spirit of the original law and has put millions of Californians at risk. We believe it is important for physicians to engage on this issue and crack down on other physicians who are practicing outside of the accepted standard of care and endangering public health in the process. Thank you to our physicians and medical students who attended Legislative Day to advocate on behalf of your patients and public health. Sincerely, Christian L.
