Dear Physicians, The most serious drug crisis the U.S. has ever experienced is with overdose deaths from opioids in the forms of prescription medications or illicit drugs. This issue has become a public health crisis with devastating consequences. In Sacramento, our medical society has been addressing opioid misuse and abuse and leading the charge with the SSVMS RX Safe Physicians program. This coalition of physicians and community experts focuses on educating providers, promoting complimentary methods of pain management to physicians and patients, and increasing access to Naloxone. RX Safe Physicians, along with Sacramento County, the Sacramento County Opioid Coalition, CSU Sacramento, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration is hosting an Opioid Summit on September 12, 2018 at CSU Sacramento. I invite you to join healthcare professionals, treatment and prevention experts, educators, students, and law enforcement leadership for an in-depth discussion of the prevention, treatment, and enforcement efforts being undertaken to combat this growing public health crisis.
