PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Call to Action

Paul Reynolds2022.jpg

SSVMS and CMA urgently need all physicians, residents, and medical students to send a letter to the US Department of Education before Friday, August 12, 2022, urging them to allow qualified California physicians who provide care in non-profit hospitals and clinics to receive federal student loan forgiveness.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program was intended to provide loan forgiveness to individuals who commit to community service for 10 years by working full time (30 hours/week) in non-profit organizations, such as non-profit hospitals and clinics.  Unfortunately, the program’s implementing regulations were narrowed to require physicians to be “directly employed.”  California law prohibits hospitals and clinics from directly employing physicians.

Please join SSVMS/CMA in sending a strong message to the DOE that in order to reverse physician shortages and protect access to care, qualified California physicians must be allowed to participate in the federal loan forgiveness program.

The California Medical Association has prepared a sample letter and instructions for you to provide commentary quickly and efficiently.  It only takes 3 minutes to make your voice heard.

Paul D. Reynolds, MD

SSVMS Future of Medicine

This summer, the Future of Medicine program worked with 87 local high school students to present them a pathway to a career in healthcare.  Their experiences included job-shadowing, presentations, and (clockwise from upper left): a sheep heart lab, tying bandages, touring the Museum of Medical History, learning CPR, exploring an ambulance, and so much more!
