MEDICAL

SOCIETY NEWS
Volume 8, Issue 1
January, 2019
The Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society is dedicated to bringing together physicians from all modes of practice to promote the art and science of quality medical care and to enhance the physical and mental health of our entire community.
Dear Physicians,

Happy New Year! I am grateful for the honor to serve as the 2019 President of the Medical Society.

On January 1, 2019, a new law took effect that requires all security prescription forms to have a uniquely serialized number. This new law also requires California physicians who prescribe controlled substances to use updated controlled substance prescription forms effective January 1, 2019. SSVMS and the California Medical Association (CMA) is very concerned that this does not provide enough time for physicians to re-order forms and integrate the use of the new forms, which could be a serious barrier to patients who must access necessary medications in a timely manner. The California Board of Pharmacy recently said it would "not make enforcement a priority" if pharmacists choose to fill prescriptions written on security prescription forms that were compliant prior to January 1, but are not compliant with the new serialization requirement. Physicians are encouraged to contact their security prescription vendors to ensure compliance with the new requirements.

SSVMS and CMA will provide additional information as it becomes available. For updated information and for a link to the list of the DOJ's approved vendors, click here.

Sincerely,
Christian L. Serdahl, MD
President, Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society
