Urge Governor to Veto AB 890
Dear Colleagues,

A dangerous bill that would undermine physician-led care and could create a lower tier of care for low-income patients in particular is making its way to the desk of Governor Gavin Newsom for signature. AB 890 (Wood) was passed by the Legislature on Monday. CMA and SSVMS are strongly opposed to AB 890, which would give nurse practitioners (NPs) the ability to practice independently without standard safeguards in place.

SSVMS and CMA are urging all physicians to contact Gov. Newsom and tell him to veto this dangerous bill and ensure patient safety is protected.

In the News

Physicians for a Healthy California (PHC) is now accepting applications for the third cycle of the graduate medical education (GME) grant program, CalMedForce.

In this cycle of the program, approximately $38M will be awarded to primary care and emergency medicine residency programs in California. All eligible residency programs are encouraged to apply, and priority will be given to programs in medically underserved areas and populations. CalMedForce dedicates voter-approved revenues from California’s Proposition 56 tobacco tax to train physicians and help California address its growing physician shortage, which is estimated to reach a 10.500-clinician shortfall by 2030 according to the California Future Health Workforce Commission.

Applications are due by September 21, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. (PST). Please review these resources in submitting application:

Visit CalMedForce.org for more information, including fact sheets, infographics and awardee information from previous cycles. If you would like to be added to our distribution list, email CalMedForce@phcdocs.org with “subscribe” in the subject line.

Physician Wellness Survey
The Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society (SSVMS) cares about physicians, and helping you find joy in your practice of medicine is our priority. To identify potential solutions for burnout at the individual and systems level in the Sacramento Region, your participation is needed to complete a short, anonymous survey. You'll receive a $20 Amazon gift card for 5 minutes of your time!

You should have received an email with a link to our online surveyTo ensure your anonymity, the email was sent directly from National Business Research Institute, Inc. (NBRII). Your input is critical to this issue as your responses will be de-identified, aggregated, and shared with leaders across all health systems and medical groups in the Sacramento Region.

This survey is a follow up to one conducted in 2018. The results were published in a White Paper and individualized recommendations were made to each of the region’s medical groups. You may find the white paper here.
